Si Sudachan

Although Thai historical accounts do not give much attention to female historical figures, there is one exception – SI SUDACHAN.

Si Sudachan (15th century) was one of the four primary concubines of a Ayutthaya king, King Chairacha. It was believed that she was originally a princess, a descendant of the U-tong Dynasty. Since she had at least one son with King Chaichara, she held more power than any other consort. After King Chaichara died of some sickness during the war, Si Sudachan became a regent by claiming that her son was too young to rule. She also began an affair with Khun Worawongsathirat, her own distant relative, and wielded more power by sending her relatives to rule Ayutthaya tributary states.

However, it was impossible for Ayutthaya nobles and officials to accept a woman as a ruler. After a series of killings and secret plots, Si Sudachan was overthrown by Tianracha (later known as Pra Maha Chakkraphat) and his band.
